An antique spinning wheel with a large drive wheel, turned wood supports and traditional spinning mechanism. Before commercially manufactured textiles became readily available, spinning wheels were essential tools for turning natural fibers such as wool and flax into yarn or thread. Once a practical piece of household equipment, surviving examples are now reminders of the enormous amount of work that once went into producing even the most basic necessities.
